Man struck by bus possibly saved student from being hit

BOURBONNAIS, IL (CNN) - Sometimes the word "hero" is thrown about too loosely. But those who knew him say there's no other way to describe Thomas "Jim" Dunn, who died apparently trying to save the life of a child.

Dunn worked as a teacher's aide at a school for kids with autism and other special needs.

He was walking across the street with a student when a public transit bus hit him. The bus barely missed the student and investigators are now looking into witness statements that claim Dunn pushed the child out of harm's way.

"Knowing Jim Dunn, it would not be surprising had he done that," said Interim Police Chief Greg Kunce with the Bourbonnais Police Department. "If you know Jim at all, that would be an instinctive reaction that he would have."

Protecting and serving is something Dunn knew well. He was a nearly 20-year veteran of the Bourbonnais Police Auxiliary Unit.

Dunn is survived by two children.

An investigation into the incident continues. Illinois State Police say it may take a few weeks before a report is filed.
