SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Winter weather left drivers to navigate slick roads Monday in Southaven, though police said no major accidents were reported.

Late Monday afternoon, Southaven Police Chief Tom Long said, for the most part, traffic moved smoothly, even on accident-prone Goodman Road.

Long believed many people heeded warnings issued before the snow fell to stay off the road.  He implored drivers to continue to take precautions while driving, especially when it comes to the distance required to stop a vehicle on ice.

"That's the error we see with most accidents," he said. "You just need to allow a whole lot more room to stop."

Monday afternoon, crews in DeSoto County were doing their part to prepare roads and bridges for an expected re-freeze later in the night.  Additionally, the state of Mississippi had up to 200 workers between Jackson and Memphis addressing rural areas and the interstate.

Meanwhile, officials with DeSoto County Schools canceled classes scheduled for Tuesday.
