Gov't: Reduce level of fluoride in drinking water

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The federal government has recommended the amount of fluoride in drinking water be lowered to avoid the condition of fluorosis, which causes spotting on teeth.

The recommended range of fluoride has been .7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter of water since 1962. The new recommendations are set at just .7 milligrams of fluoride per liter.

The EPA will determine whether the maximum amount of fluoride allowed in water will also be lowered.
