Study: Too much sitting could shorten your life

CLEVELAND (NBC) - A sedentary lifestyle may shorten one's life and cause cardiac problems, experts said.

"People who are sedentary have increased inflammation just as a result of sitting," said Dr. Marc Gillinov with the Cleveland Clinic. "Perhaps it's something to do with less muscle contraction."

Increased inflammation in the body is linked to heart disease, and a new study from England found that markers for inflammation were twice as high for people who spent more than four hours a day sitting in front of a TV or computer.

Those individuals were also much more likely to suffer major cardiac problems and die prematurely.

The one solution: exercise. Doctors said it's the little ways of working exercise into an otherwise sedentary lifestyle that will help make a difference in the long run.

"Take the stairs instead of an elevator," Gillinov said. "Walk down the hallway to talk to somebody instead of sending an email."
