Detroit Auto Show names car, truck of the year

DETROIT (CNN) - The Chevy Volt has been named "Car of the Year" at the North American International Auto Show, while the Ford Explorer took home "Truck of the Year" honors.

The twin honors cap a remarkable turnaround for the U.S. auto industry.

Already, the new plug-in Volt has racked up a number of awards in the United States, including Motor Trend Car of the Year, beating out the Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Sonata.

Ford Explorer won out over the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango.

As the industry gathers in Detroit, the outlook is for strong sales gains in 2011, after an 11 percent rise in 2010.
