Oklahoma swears in first female governor

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK (CNN) - A woman is leading the state of Oklahoma for the first time ever.

Under snowy skies, Republican Mary Fallin was sworn in as governor Monday.

After taking the oath of office, she vowed to improve the state's economy and improve education.

"I was always amazed at her dedication to the state and her seriousness about everything, didn't want to miss a call, didn't want to miss a meeting, was always on the floor, so I'm so happy to have her as my governor," said Dorothy Franck, a friend of the new governor.

Fallin is returning to Oklahoma after spending the past four years as a U.S. Representative.

"It shows how girls are as empowered as boys are and we can do anything we set our mind to," said Haydan Ransom, a Girl Scout who attended the inauguration.
