Police: Woman kills herself at Memphis hospital

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Police in Memphis say a woman stayed in a hospital waiting room for more than 16 hours after being released and then apparently shot and killed herself after an officer talked to her about going to a shelter.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Karen Rudolph says the 57-year-old woman said she needed to use the restroom before leaving with the officer Wednesday night at Methodist South Hospital. The officer heard a gunshot in the restroom and the woman, who police didn't identify, was pronounced dead.

Hospital security officers told police the woman had been discharged from the hospital that morning but never left the waiting room.

Ruth Ann Hale, a spokeswoman for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, says they believe she was homeless and had nowhere to go.
