MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Expectant mothers got an opportunity to learn how to care and be safe with their babies at home Saturday.

In two months, Jujuanna Bryant will welcome her newborn baby into the world.

"This is my first child," said Bryant.  "I'm very, very excited.  Nervous at times.  Anxious at other times."

Safe Kids MidSouth, the Infant Mortality Force and Maternal League of Memphis teamed up to host a baby shower for expectant mothers who are considered at risk for infant mortality, premature births and SIDS.

Moms-to-be were invited to learn more about safety.  The women received child safety seats and cribs.

"They taught us how to properly put a baby into a car seat," said Bryant, "how to lie the baby in its crib and just very important safety tips."

"With the high rate of unemployment in the area, a lot of them don't have the health care insurance so that they're able to go in and see their doctors regularly," said event organizer Glenda Yancey.  "This is giving them an opportunity to find out information that's very important to having their children survive."

Debra Hester, president of Girls, Inc., said teens having babies impacts infant mortality rates.  She said teen mothers also have a ripple effect on the entire community, including the number of high school dropouts.

"If you're a teen mom, the odds are you're going to drop out," said Hester.

Teen mothers also have an effect on crime.

"Males of teen moms are more likely to commit crimes," said Hester.  "Females of teen mom are more likely to be teen moms."

The statistics have many local organizations stepping up to empower girls and reduce teen pregnancies.

On January 20, Girls, Inc. will debut a massive media and educational campaign called, "No Baby!"  The campaign includes billboards and a website that tries to give girls the tools needed to resist peer pressure to have sex.
