Navy vet plays college basketball

GLEN ELlYN, IL (CNN) - Like many college basketball players, one student athlete in Chicago is dreaming of becoming a starter for his team. But he is a little different.

Jermaine Townes was in the Navy, stationed in a war zone, when most of his teammates were wearing diapers. At 39, the 6' 4" center recently went back to school at the College of DuPage, where he learned the school has a D-III basketball team.

"I said, 'Coach, you've got a 39-year-old war veteran here. Do you have any room?'" Townes said, laughing. "I said, 'I want to try out.'"

Don Klaas, the basketball coach, told Townes to come see him the next day.

"What I saw was a 6-4 guy that had some pretty good shooting touch," Klass said. "And with that, who knows where it can go?"

Townes, who is studying computer science, is a former Navy cook. He would also like to open his own restaurant someday.
