MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - It was comment that has definitely gotten Memphis Mayor A C Wharton's attention.  During a "Today Show" interview about the Frayser High School pregnancy problem, Dr. Janet Taylor, a New York psychiatrist suggested that part of the problem is that there are no OBGYN's in Shelby County.

"There are no OBGYN's in that county, so when you talk about reliable, accurate, information, there's a disconnect that really happens," Taylor said.

"That's obviously a mistake, but we're not going to let that mistake divert our attention from what the real issue is," Wharton said after the broadcast.

Wharton quickly responded to the doctors comments.

"The key is to give the young ladies a sense of pride so they can finds ways of satisfying their egos, rather than using their bodies and engaging in sexual activity," Wharton said. "That's the first thing. If we take care of that, we won't have to worry about how many OBGYN's you have in a neighborhood."

Wednesday afternoon, Wharton appeared live on MSNBC, where he offered solutions on how to battle teen pregnancies.  Wharton said teens getting pregnant is not a school or medical problem, but everyone's problem.

"To think that we could solve this problem by simply placing an OBGYN on every block, that still would not do it," he said.

Wharton said that is why more resources, like faith based programs, education and community networks are needed to help prevent teen pregnancies.

Via Twitter, Taylor issued an apology for her comments, writing, "Sending a huge apology to the hard-working docs in/and around Fraser, Tn. (sic) I applaud your hard work."
