BRIGHTON, TN (WMC-TV) - A Tipton County man was charged Wednesday with killing his fiance and lying to police about it.

James Brooks is charged with first degree murder, filing a false report and giving false information to officers.

Brooks first told investigators two men broke into their Brighton home and attacked him and Dottie Reed. Reed died from her injuries.

Investigators uncovered the truth about what happened within two days. Brooks has been sitting in jail on a murder charge for the past four months. A judge now says the case against him has merit.

Brooks is in the Tipton County Jail on a $1 million bond. He is waiting for a decision from the next grand jury session.

"There was a preliminary hearing for James Brooks," said Tipton County Chief Deputy Donna Turner. "And after the hearing, Judge Peeler did bound it over to the action of the March grand jury."

On September 26, Brooks called 911 himself and told deputies the two strangers had broken into the house and assaulted him and Reed.

Investigators said Brooks had superficial injuries to his face and arms, but Reed was unconscious and had several head injuries and bruises all over her body.

Reed was rushed to the MED, but died one day later.

Investigators said Brooks' story was hard to believe from the beginning. During an interview, deputies said Brooks admitted her hurt Reed and the home investigation was a ruse intended to trick investigators.

"It was only between the two of them," said Turner. "Obviously, it was an altercation. It was a blunt force trauma that she had received. And it was a domestic-related homicide."

The next Tipton County grand jury will be seated in March. It could choose to drop the charges or indict Brooks and send him to trial.
