MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A suspect was shot and killed Sunday afternoon after he pointed his gun at two Memphis police officers.

Officials said the officers were responding to a shooting in the 1900 block of Thrift just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday when they spotted the armed suspect leaving the scene.

A witness, who did not want her name used, said she was coming home from church when she got caught in the middle of the confrontation between the suspect and police.

She says the gunman looked at her car like he wanted to get in it.

She said he came toward her telling her to stop. She says while he walked toward her, he pointed his gun at police behind him.

"(Police) were constantly hollering, 'Stop, stop, stop, stop! Drop your gun, drop your weapon,' she said. "He wouldn't say anything, he was just walking....To me, it was as if he wanted them to shoot him. For him to not drop his gun."

Memphis Police say after the gunman refused to drop his weapon, two officers shot him.

"I turned and looked again and he was on the ground," The witness said.

Police say the man later died at The Med.

The witness says she is thankful she and her two children are okay.

"Thank God, because I had my two babies in the car with me....Could have been me and my babies."

The victim shot by the gunman is Dale Hines. He was in good condition at The Med Sunday night.

The identities of the officers, and the deceased suspect were not immediately released.

The officers will remain off duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
