CORDOVA, TN (WMC-TV) - A man was shot and killed inside a Cordova home Sunday night after he tried to assault a woman, authorities said.

According to Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Chip Washington, David Robinson was killed in a shooting that occurred inside his ex-girlfriend's home in the 9200 block of Chimneyrock.

Washington said the shooting happened when Robinson showed up at his ex-girlfriend's house and knocked on a bedroom window.  When she told him to go away, he knocked in the front door, assaulted her, and threatened to stab her to death.

"Her current boyfriend, who was at the house as well, came out of the bedroom with a gun and shot the individual twice," Washington said. "He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead."

Investigators said the shooting investigation is still open, but they do not expect to file any charges against the ex-girlfriend or her new boyfriend, because the law is likely on their side.

"If anyone enters your dwelling, then we all have a right to protect ourselves," Washington said. 'We'll take all the information that we gather, send it to the AG's office and let them make the final determination on whether charges will indeed be filed or not."

Investigators said the ex-girlfriend was not seriously hurt.
