MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Mid-South teens caught in the middle of Shelby County's pregnancy crisis have a phone number they can call for help.

Linc 211 is a comprehensive, local database of human services resources in the Mid-South.  According to agency manager Ron Reid, the service's lines have recently been very busy.

"We've had an uptick in calls since the teen pregnancy issue in Memphis has been made known," Reid said.

By simply dialing 211, teen parents or those who are expecting babies can get the help they need.  According to Reid, it's a community information and referral service.

"If a young lady thinks she's pregnant and doesn't know who to turn to, or is afraid to talk to a parent or school counselor or go to a doctor on her own, she can call us," he said.

With the teen pregnancy crisis in Shelby County, Reid understands how important this service is across the Mid-South.

"It may be that this young lady may be sexually active or this young man may be sexually active, and they need to know what to do to avoid pregnancy," he said.

Reid said his 15 member staff is on standby 70 hours a week to offer assistance. They have access to database with information and programs that deal with teen pregnancy prevention and infant mortality.

"Prenatal care, nutrition, all those issues," he said. "All those factors that affect low birth rates."

211 is a free call for anyone with questions, and when calling, you can remain anonymous.
