MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - One man was injured after a pipe bomb exploded at a Lakeland house Saturday.

The bomb went off behind a house in the 6000 block of Palomino in Lakeland.  Video from Chopper 5 showed Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies along with ATF investigators on the scene.

The pipe bomb activity was exposed at 7:30 Saturday morning when Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies received a call about an explosion in the Lakeland neighborhood.  When they arrived, they found a 22-year-old man with a severe injury to his foot.

The man was taken to the MED and is one of three men who will be questioned in the case.

Deputies detained two other men for questioning.  The three were all friends.  One of the men lived at the house they were behind when one of the bombs exploded.

"From what we can determine preliminarily, they were making pipe bombs," said Shelby County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Chip Washington.  "Apparently one of the individuals was working on one of the devices and it went off, exploded, consequently.  It damaged his right foot pretty severely.  Right now, he's at the MED in stable condition."

Neighbor Kay Lee said the people who live in the house have always been good neighbors.

"As far as I know they're just great people, and the mom and dad are, too," said Lee.  "Especially the dad, he helps all the neighbors.  I feel very badly for them that all this attention was caused to their place."

Washington said it was unclear why the men were making pipe bombs or how they planned to use them.

Charges have not been filed in this case.  A spokesperson said two of the men involved do have prior criminal records.
