Coffee shop goes digital

(NBC) - A well known coffee chain has introduced a new application that allowed customers to pay with their smartphones.

MSNBC tech guru Bob Sullivan downloaded the Starbucks mobile pay application, transferred money into the new account, and scanned the on-screen barcode to make his purchase.

"It's very convenient and the best part for me is it's one less card I have to carry in my wallet; no more Starbucks card," said Sullivan.

The mobile pay application is expected to spread quickly, but advocates believe it could get out of hand.

"When you have a payment application right on your phone it makes it a little bit easier to do both absent-minded spending and impulse spending," said Catey Hill of SmartMoney.

Rewards are offered to frequent users of the Starbucks mobile pay application.

The Starbucks mobile pay application is available for Blackberry phones, iPhones and iPod Touch.
