MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Defendant Victor Trezevant was on trial last week for his part in the murder of U of M football player Taylor Bradford.

But it is what a courtroom deputy seated behind Trezevant appeared to be doing that's getting a lot of attention.

Many told us it appeared as if the deputy was sleeping.

"Son of a gun," said one man to whom we showed the video.

"It does look like he's sleeping," said a woman.

"In his own little world," added a friend.

The deputy finally looked up from what may have appeared to be a courtroom catnap. However, his boss said two deputies were actually working when the video was shot.

"They're texting each other," said Assistant Chief Larry Young.

Young oversees more than a 100 courtroom deputies and investigated the video after hearing from people in his own office who saw it on Action News 5 during our trial coverage.

"That seems to be the best means that we have to communicate in that courtroom without getting on a radio or speaking out loud," explained Young.  "Which would be inappropriate," he added.

Judge Chris Craft did not care to comment on camera.  But he did send an E-mail backing up the claim that the deputy was texting.

"If I thought for a minute that the deputy in question had been sleeping, I would have entered an order that he be removed from my courtroom staff, and he would not still be working in Division VIII," wrote Craft.

"Cause we are very concerned about the officers demeanor in the courtroom," said Chief Young.

Young said the deputies chosen to work during last week's trial were reminded of the rules and the fact that cameras would potentially be watching their every move.
