FL man falls overboard after burial services

NORTH PALM BEACH, FL (NBC) - A burial ceremony almost turned more deadly after a Florida man helped his friend spread ashes on the Florida coast.

Bud Jones, 62, fell into the ocean east of North Palm Beach after he helped his friend, Barry Kendrick, spread his wife's ashes into the ocean on Monday.

"I'm all right with that because I know he's going to be OK," Kendrick said. "He's been through a lot himself."

The driver of the boat had to act quickly because Jones was not wearing a life jacket.

"He kind of panicked," Kendrick said. "He was there in 5 seconds."

Kendrick said he immediately threw Jones a life jacket and the Coast Guard made it to scene 15 minutes later.

Jones was taken to the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach and is expected to recover.

Kendrick said before the frantic accident, the ceremony went well.

The scene was investigated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, and no charges were filed.
