MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Each year, 30 high school students are chosen from across the country for positions in the 2011 Grammy Jazz ensembles. This year, one of those students is from right here in Shelby County - and it's his third year to be selected for the prestigious group.

Action News 5 caught up with Briarcrest Senior and jazz singer Taylor Daniel before department for his next gig, which just so happens to be in Los Angles. That's where he, along with dozens of other remarkable high school vocalists and instrumentalists are creating a jazz choir, combo and band.

"We'll immediately launch into practice, singing six hours a day," Taylor said. "We'll do that for two days and then after that, we just starting hitting up (at) the town."

The ensemble will perform at Grammy week events like the MusiCares Person of the Year tribute, then attend the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, and perform at the Celebration after-party. They will also perform for and with Grammy award winning artists.

Taylor performed with jazz pianist, composer and band leader Herbie Hancock his first year with the Grammy Jazz Ensemble. Last year it was jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell.

"And then to kick it off, we also record a CD at Capital Records," he said.

Taylor said the experience has made him learn to read music, appreciate the outcome of hard work, and affirmed his talent. More importantly, he has friends all over the country who have the same love for music as him.

The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards will be held Sunday night, February 13. Daniel and his peers in the Grammy Ensemble are also eligible for more than $2 million in college scholarships from the Grammy Foundation's college partners.
