MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Family and friends are mourning the death of a 15-year-old Cordova teen killed in a shooting Thursday.

Demario Burnett moved to Cordova six months ago with the potential for a better life, but Burnett's life ended Thursday when the 15-year-old was gunned down in the street just a couple blocks from his home.

"He was my foster brother, but I saw him as much more" E.J. Johnson said. "I mean, he was one of my best friends."

Johnson said Burnett was the oldest of seven children, but when his biological mother fell on hard times, the children were placed in foster care.  Jefferson's mother was caring for Burnett, along with his four and five-year-old little brothers.

Thursday, Burnett left the house just after 3:00 p.m. to visit a friend in the neighborhood, but someone shot him before he got there.

"When am I going to wake up from this? It's like a bad dream. It can't be real," Johnson said.

Burnett transferred to Cordova High School in the fall, where he was in the ninth grade.

"It's just hard to believe," Burnett said.

Robert Carter described Burnett as a good kid, but added he liked to gamble on dice games.

"I knew that wasn't right for him to do," Carter said. "I even said it to him, maybe you shouldn't be doing that and different stuff, but he'd just shrug it off. I mean it doesn't make him a bad person or anything, just wrong decisions."

Burnett would have turned 16 on February 27th.  Friends say he was hoping to play basketball at Cordova High.  Coaches told him to stay out of trouble and they would consider him for the team next year.
