MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The family of a deceased 13-year-old Ridgeway Middle School student believes her death could have been prevented.

The family of Cecilia "CeCe" Snow hired attorney Randy Fishman of the Ballin, Ballin and Fishman Law Firm.

"It's a very sad set of circumstances," said Fishman.  "We've been hired to look into what happened, why it happened, and determine whether or not something should have been done that wasn't done."

Fishman said Snow died in December of last year possibly as the result of a head injury sustained at Ridgeway Middle School.  Snow walked into the stationary metal pole between double doors.

Fishman said it appeared numerous school officials were alerted.  However, her family said Snow never received proper medical attention and they were never notified.

Pete Carlyon's daughters attend Ridgeway Middle School.

"From what I remember, she had complained of a headache or something," said Carlyon.  "And the next day, they went to school and it turned out the little girl had passed away.  The story was she went home, went to sleep and never got up.  That's what I heard."

Carlyon said his daughters knew Snow.

"I never met her  myself, but they said she was charming, always smiling, happy kid," said Carlyon.

Snow's father said the school had surveillance video from the incident, but the school claimed it was recorded over.

"That was my understanding," said Fishman.  "We don't know if it is available now or not."

Fishman said Memphis City Schools is on notice that they are investigating what happened.

"Anytime there is a serious injury at school, you want to make certain a child gets medical help and is examined," said Fishman.

Action News 5 reported last month that both the principal and assistant principal were suspended from Ridgeway Middle School.  The district would only confirm there was an investigation of "processes and procedures."
