MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Police have identified the woman found dead in a car Saturday as 24-year-old Laquita Gilkey.

Residents on Jean Drive watched in shock Saturday as their neighborhood became a crime scene.

"It's scary," said neighbor Jeanne Santee.  "Nothing like this ever happened here."

Police said Gilkey had been shot to death in an apparent homicide.

"Slumped in the driver's seat with the door half-cocked, it was like ... the door had been open and she got shot right there in the seat," said neighbor Reverend John Crawley.

Crawley said he walked up to the car for a closer look after the neighbor told him about the murder just a few feet from his driveway.

"It wasn't no bullet holes in the car," said Crawley.  "It was two in the chest.  You could see where two bullets had penetrated."

Crawley said a neighbor heard the shot around 3:00 a.m. Saturday.  He did not realize until the next morning that someone had been murdered until his wife tried to back out of the driveway but could not due to the victim's car blocking the way.

"You didn't see, because she was just slumped back in the seat," said Linda Crawley.

Police have released very few details about the victim.

Reverend Crawley said he knew what it was like to lose a child to gun violence.  He said his heart goes out to the victim's family.

"I know what it is to lose a child," he said.  "It's devastating to lose them like that.  To be killed, shot.  It's devastating."
