Con artist uses Craigslist to rip off egg donors

BOISE, ID (NBC) - Janae Halgerson appeared before a judge Friday after being charged with running a scheme that stole eggs from would-be donors.

The 31-year-old is facing charges six federal charges for wire fraud and making false statement.

Amber Puckett, of Kirkwood, MO, was a victim after she spotted Mid-West Egg Donation on Craigslist.

Puckett wanted to donate eggs to help a couple have a baby and at the same time make some extra money. Puckett said she was contracted and promised $5,000 for a donation, which she made is 2009.

"Everything went pretty smoothly. I got emails prompting me what I needed to do next," Puckett said. "I would receive return phone calls, and communication was good. I never once thought twice about the whole process. All communication pretty much ended after my donation in mid-July."

Angela Polete, of St. Louis, MO, had a similar experience the same year.

"I was supposed to get paid six weeks after the donation took place," Polete said. "Six weeks later, after the donation took place, it came and went. I started questioning them, you know, 'What's wrong? Why haven't I gotten paid?'"

Puckett Polete both say they've never been paid.

Federal court documents said Halgerson never intended to pay donors and kept upwards of $10,000 for herself.

"I was reassured the couple actually received the eggs," Puckett said. "I'm at least grateful that they got what they were looking for, but very disappointed that I was promised something they probably knew I was never going to get."

At this point both women are waiting to see what happens in court but are happy to know their case is being heard.

"I don't even care about the money anymore," Polete said. "I'm just more focused on her not being allowed to do this to anyone else."
