MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Authorities are investigating the death of a three-year-old boy at a residence in the 1800 block of Benning in Memphis.

Memphis police and firefighters were called to the residence Sunday afternoon.  According to a source, a three-year-old was not breathing when first responders arrived, and the child appeared to be badly injured.

Action News 5's Nick Kenney knocked on the door of the home early Tuesday afternoon, but no one answered. Nearby neighbors said they had no clue an three-year-old had died on their street, although two said they saw several police cars on the street Sunday afternoon.

Investigators declined to confirm the specifics of the call, but through an email, an MPD spokesperson described the case as an ongoing "death investigation."

As of Tuesday afternoon, no one had been charged or was in jail in the death.
According to the Shelby County Tax Assessor, the home where the death occurred is owned by Vernice and Leatrice Neely.

Deariuos Jefferson's obituary appeared in Tuesday's Commercial Appeal, though it includes no details about his life.  Investigators are waiting on an autopsy to tell them the cause and manner of his death.
