Parents arrested for leaving kids alone in hotel

ORLANDO (CNN) - A trip to Orlando, FL, for one family ended with the parents behind bars.

The North Dakota couple was arrested Tuesday after their three young children were found alone and scared in a trashed hotel room.

Richard Watts and Katie Weaver were reportedly out shopping, leaving a 7-year-old, an 11-month-old and an 11-week-old alone in their hotel.

"Of concern, really, was that we had a newborn or infant that has a condition that requires a heart monitor. That heart monitor wasn't functioning properly," said Carrie Hoeppner with the Department of Children and Families.

Hotel workers call 911 after the 7-year-old called the front desk from the room because he was scared.

When police showed up, they found the kids in filthy conditions. The balcony door to the room was also wide open.

"They found cigarette butts. They found dirty towels and the door, according to the management, was left propped open and they're on the 10th floor," said Barbara Jones with the Orlando Police Department.

Police waited at least an hour with the kids.

When the parents showed up, they were questioned and investigators say Watts had a bag of meth on him. Weaver and Watts are both charged with three counts of child neglect and Watts faces and additional drug charge.

The three kids are now in foster care.

North Dakota officials say they'll pay to fly the kids back home to be with relatives.
