GERMANTOWN, TN (WMC-TV) - "12 Angry Men" by Reginald Rose is no stranger to stage or screen...but what might surprise you: this particular production was entirely run by students at St. George's Independent School in Germantown.

Senior Anna Carroll Horton thought directing the play would be a great senior independent study project since she plans to be a theater major in college. At St. George's, every senior is required to engage in a senior independent study project related to a topic of interest and getting hands-on experience or internships, as well as producing major research papers.

Horton convinced fellow-senior Brannon Smithwick that producing the play would be easier than writing a paper, but both quickly learned it wasn't.

According to Smithwick, "I was the producer, so my role was basically brining all of her (Horton's) creative ideas together, as far as costums, set, props, lights, sound, as far as all that goes... making sure the show really ran smoothly and we had every element we needed."

In addition to the long hours spent hunting with Smithwick for set pieces, props and costumes, Horton added 4 hours of practice 5 days a week and "the challenge of trying to communicate and be in charge of people my own age, which is really difficult."

The work was tedious and foreign to both young ladies because, although they each had done plenty of work on-stage as actors, neither had ever directly experienced the challenges of directing and producing. But hard work aside, Horton and Smithwick say the experience was certainly more rewarding than simply writing a paper about a play.

St. George's production of "12 Angry Men" ran last month at the school's chapel/performing arts center to rave reviews.
