Rally urges Memphians to vote yes to charter surrender

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Proponents of a city and county school merger held a rally Saturday in an effort to get out the vote.

Citizens for Better Education, a local group formed earlier this year to advocate for the unification of Memphis and Shelby County Schools, is leading a city-wide outreach effort to encourage Memphians to vote yes to a charter surrender referendum.

"We have to unify these schools to protect the future for our children," said Cardell Orrin with Citizens for Better Education.  "We have to protect education for our children.  And we have to do a better job at educating all our children and realize the successes and failures of both Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools, bringing them together and taking the best of both systems."

Vote Yes for School Unity rallies will continue around the city leading up to the March 8 election on a charter surrender referendum.
