MASON, TN (WMC-TV) – Authorities shot and killed a carjacking suspect Monday morning after he led police on a chase from Brownsville to Mason, and then fired at officers.

Officers with the Brownsville Police Department, Mason Police Department, and Tipton County Sheriff's Department were involved in the pursuit, which ended near Highway 70 and Highway 59 in Mason.

The shootout turned Highway 70 in the center Mason into a crime scene, with paramedics hovering over a dead body in the street and bullet casings everywhere.

"The guy got out with a cheboygan hat like mine and went boom boom boom at the police car," said David Cartwright.

Cartwright watched the shootout unfold, describing a wild scene where the suspect jumped out of the white truck he'd stolen with two guns in his hands, firing multiple times.

"It looked like he hit them guns together, and he came up like this one was this way, and one was this way," he said, added that the suspect had a third gun in his back pocket.

Meanwhile, city worker Justin Tiblier said he and his colleagues ran for their lives when they heard shots ring out.

"I was gone," he said. "These guys up here standing up front and all, we broke this way. We didn't want to get shot at."

Investigators say the shooting started while officers were trying to stop a white truck the suspect had stolen.  Earlier in the morning, the truck was reported in a police radio broadcast as being involved in a carjacking in the Brownsville, Tennessee area, heading toward Mason.

When the truck got to Mason officers tried to pull along side and force the vehicle over.

"The suspect got out of the vehicle firing shots at officers on the scene," said Deputy Chief Donna Turner of the Tipton County Sheriff's Office. "They returned fire and he was killed."

Cartright said it was something he'll not soon forget.

"I just looked.  I said that he got to be crazy, because he acted like he wanted police to kill him," he said.
