Treadmill keeps man and his four-legged friend healthy

WAUKEE, IA (CNN) - An Iowa senior citizen has found a way to stay in shape and at the same time bond with his best friend, his beloved Boston Terrier.

The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee, Iowa, is home to 95 spry senior citizens. One of these residents is an exercise crazy canine by the name of Miss Casey.

Miss Cassey's workout partner, the decidedly slower 86-year-old Bud Karli, can be found most days on the exercise room's treadmill.

Karli joked that he has to work to keep up with Miss Casey.

Karli said when he moved to the retirement community five years ago, he was worried that his beloved four-legged companion would not be able to adjust to apartment living.

"I thought, I'll make things easier for the exercise by teaching her to ride on a treadmill," Karli said.

Karli said at first, Miss Casey did not take very well to the treadmill.

"I held her in my arms and let her feet drag on the belt," Karli said.

He did this off and on for a few weeks. But after working to train her, Karli heard nothing but the happy sound of little paws.

Karli said now Miss Casey does her roadwork twice a day. She walks 10 minutes in the morning and five minutes in the afternoon. If she doesn't get her work out in, Karli said the loving Boston Terrier turns into a "Boston Terror."

But thankfully Miss Casey has her treadmill. When she is done for the day, Karli said she quickly enjoys a well deserved doggy nap.
