High school journalist lands interview with Eminem

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MI (CNN) - It's an interview many professional journalists have tried but failed to get, but one Michigan teen got the scoop for a school newspaper article.

After a few letters and some phone calls, Annie Reed landed an exclusive interview with hometown rapper Eminem.

Before, a tad soft spoken, Annie Reed's popularity at East Hills Middle School is now at ear-ringing levels.

Weeks back, a journalism teacher at the school issued an assignment allowing student to simply pick something important to them to write about.

"I decided I wanted to write about Eminem because he grew up in Detroit," Reed said. "So I thought it would be fun. And my teacher told me you know you're going to have to try and interview him."

The pressure was on and Reed responded.

"At first I sent 20 letters out, didn't get any responses," Reed said. "I called Interscope and Shady Records, and I got a hold of some of his agents."

Finally after a few weeks, she got the opportunity to talk with him.

"He answered the phone and he said, 'Annie? Hey how you doin'?' and I almost had a heart attack," Reed said.

Reed said they talked for about 10 to 15 minutes.

"He talked about how he really liked Detroit," Reed said. "'It's cause we're like a city like no other,' is one of the things he said. He also told me what music he listened to growing up."

Reed said after the interview, she hung up and called all of her friends to brag.

After the experience, the eighth-grader said she may pursue a career in journalism after college.
