MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Rush hour traffic along popular cut-through Whitney Avenue was blocked in both directions Wednesday as Memphis Police crime scene investigators scoured a wooded area just off the roadway.

That's where human remains were found by a TDOT crew doing survey work.

"Uniform officers did verify what appears to be a human skeleton," said Lt. Col. J.M. Willis.

At one point, Chopper 5 watched as one detective reached his hand into the brush where a human skull was reportedly located.  Several others bones, including ribs, were found nearby.

"This will probably be a long process in that the skeletal remains are few and far between," said Willis.

Those who live in the area are accustomed to seeing serious car wrecks along this stretch of Whitney.  But news of a skeleton was somewhat surprising.

"I just hope that the remains will be found out and give peace to the family of the missing person," said Ashley Perkins.

Police would not speculate on one of the most important parts of this mystery.

"Why that body is in that location," said Willis.

It will also take time to positively identify the person to whom the bones belonged and determine exactly how his or her life may have ended along Whitney Avenue.
