HENNING, TN (WMC-TV) - About two dozen family members and friends turned out Saturday to say goodbye to an 18-year-old who apparently made some bad choices.

Chastain Montgomery, Jr. was wanted for a Nashville carjacking.  Police finally stopped him in Mason, Tennessee Monday.

Police said Chastain Montgomery, Jr. shot at them.  An officer fired back, killing him.

"Just a nice young fellow," said Marvin Montgomery, Chastain Montgomery, Jr's uncle.  "It's unbelievable."

Court records said his father, Chastain Montgomery, Sr., ran through a police line and got inside his son's stolen car.  Police arrested Chastain Montgomery, Sr. for tampering with evidence.

Marvin Montgomery, Chastain Montgomery, Sr's brother, said he was innocent until proven guilty.

"I don't believe he was involved in that," he said.  "But again, I don't know anything at all about it.  I'm as surprised as everyone else.  Totally out of character."

Sources told Action News 5 Montgomery, Sr. later confessed to the Henning Post Office murders of Paula Robinson and Judy Spray last year.

Montgomery, Sr. was locked up without bond on the day of his son's funeral.

The funeral service took place about two blocks from the Henning Post Office.  Police stood guard during the service.

"It's a tough time for everyone," said family member Andre Baldon.  "We're just going to support the family and get through this.  Whatever happens with everything else is fine."

"I think it was self defense, I will say that," said family member Jackie Montgomery.  "I think the publicity should have been based on that, then this post office stuff just took over all that."

The funeral was short.  Family members showed little emotion as they left.

The Associated Press is reporting that authorities are investigating the gun used by Chastain Montgomery, Jr. in the shootout.  They are trying to determine if it is linked to the fatal shooting of the two postal workers in October.
