BROWNSVILLE, TN (WMC-TV) - A softball coach accused of 'inappropriately touching' a female student made her first appearance in court Monday.

Chanda Franks was arraigned in Haywood County General Sessions Court.

Franks, the head softball coach, cross country coach, and wellness teacher at Haywood High School, is accused of sexual battery by an authority figure.

"You supposed to trust them, but if they do something like that, I wouldn't want to have anymore to do with them," county resident Larry Overton said.

According to court documents, Franks inappropriately touched a female student by having unlawful sexual contact with the victim, who is 14-years-old.  It happened at least twice between the dates of August 2010 and February 2011.

Overton said Franks coached his granddaughter several years ago.  He reacted to the allegations while watching a game of baseball at Haywood High.

"If I was the superintendent, she'd be gone," he said. "She wouldn't be back no more, if the allegations are right."

Alyssa Campbell, who plays softball at Haywood Junior High, was looking forward to attending Haywood High in the Fall.  She became nervous after learning about what happened.

"I just heard people telling me that she had done things like that, and that she had tried to mess with the students before," Campbell said.

The situation has left an entire school and community concerned.

"I wouldn't want to be around her," Campbell said. "I was just going to try to stay away from her as much as possible when I got here."

Franks is scheduled to return to court on March 17th.
