RIPLEY, TN (WMC-TV) - Friends and family are mourning the death of a college student found shot to death in a field.

For Becky Watson the loss of her dear colleague and friend, 23-year-old Kasey Kessler, has been tough.

"He always had a smile, always had a good word to say and we have great memories of him on Friday, our last day with him," said Watson, who worked with Kessler at Toone Elementary.

Kessler, an avid outdoorsman, was accidentally shot to death in a field near Ripley.  Family members say he was skeet shooting with a group of friends when the incident occurred.

"It's just sad," Watson said. "So unexpected. You always hope when your child, grandchild, spouse leaves the house, you hope they come back to you by the end of the day, or whenever they're supposed to."

Kessler would have graduated from University of Tennessee Martin this year. He was majoring in education, and was student teaching at Toone Elementary.

"Kasey was a real affable guy, a guy everybody liked," said teacher Robert Crowley. "He had a lot of respect from the students and staff here."

Crowley worked closely with Kessler, who he said touched lives and will be missed.

"Life is full of joy, but it's also full of hurts, and you have to learn to deal with it," he said. "You have to go on."

News of Kessler's death his the community and his family very hard. His mother is also a teacher at Toone Elementary, and his brother is a student there.
