MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The Tri-State Defender newspaper has been covering news in Memphis for decades.  Now the paper is making news with the announcement that Publisher Bernal Smith has been named to The Grio's list of history makers.

"To be recognized as someone who is in the process of making history is something I think is phenomenal," Smith said Thursday.

The Grio is a news community website in partnership with NBC.

During an interview on the Today Show, managing editor David Wilson said The Grio will focus on African America stories and perspectives.

"These are people who in the next 10 years 15 years we will all know their names," Wilson said. "Some of them you already do."

Smith, who took over the newspaper less than a year ago, is in some good company on The Grio's list.

"Like first lady Michelle Obama, Kevin Durant of the NBA, Jill Scott Neo-Soul Artist," he said.

And Smith says The Grio's recognition is already putting a national focus his newspaper and his city...

"I'm excited about the coverage the exposure that we have gotten thus far," he said. "I have people reach out to me from around the country with opportunities and congratulations."
