MILLINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South attorney is investigating Millington's mayor and the way he hire city employees.

Millington Mayor Richard Hodges said, starting Thursday, he will assume the duty of interviewing every potential city employee in every department. They must have his approval before they are hired.

"I've had some complaints from some employees," said Hodges. "I will not, as mayor, put up with a buddy-buddy system. You just have to have faith in me that's what I'm going to do."

According to a memo, private attorney Ted Hansom is investigating Hodges on accusations that he is responsible for the "buddy-buddy system."

"The concern is whether or not the mayor acted outside the scope of his authority and the ethical duty imposed on him as mayor," said Hansom.

Hansom said he is investigating claims that Hodges hired friends and political supporters, then paid them more than the compensation scale allowed outlined by city ordinance.

"Our investigation, at this point, does not indicate anything but that this is at the mayor's behest," said Hansom. "Even if the police chief did it, and it's wrong, it's up to the mayor to correct it."

"If something happens in the city bad, I get the blame, take it. Take credit for the bad whether I did it or not," said Hodges. "If something good in the city happens, I get credit for it whether I did it or not."
