MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The Bartlett man who confessed to shooting his wife in the head and disposing of her body faced a judge on murder charges Friday.

Charged with first degree murder, Thomas Pate faces trial on March 7.  He is accused of killing his wife, Micah Pate, dumping her body in the Loosahatchie River bottoms and then reporting her missing to police.

Micah Pate's father watched and listened as prosecutors and defense attorneys argued over a taped interview investigators conducted with Thomas Pate.

The tape goes on for hours.  In it, Thomas Pate confesses to his father that he killed his wife.

Defense attorneys argued that a jury should not hear potentially prejudicial parts of the tape, including references to Thomas Pate watching pornography, using drugs, or having a relationship with another woman.

Prosecutors argued those references are important because they indicate marital stress.

The judge said he will listen to the entire tape line by line and make a decision in the days before the trial.  He said he hopes to give jurors a transcript of the tape but will not if both sides cannot agree on a single transcription.
