Cops say man robbed churches by checking wedding notices

FARGO, ND (NBC) - A North Dakota man admitted to police that he robbed weddings, churches and churchgoers by looking at wedding dates and times in the newspaper.

Court documents show Travice Ledoux had been stealing from churches since he was 13.

He would show up 15 minutes before the events and make off with the wedding party's unguarded wallets and purses. Later, he switched to stealing property from churches.

Pastors said they're not surprised.

"We want to keep that trusting feeling, keep the doors open," said The Rev. Kris Gorden of Olivet Lutheran Church. "We're not frisking people as they come through the door."

Olivet is one of the 10 churches listed in the body of the charging documents as being hit by Ledoux during a wedding a year and a half ago.

Ledoux now denies the charges against him are true, but wouldn't elaborate, saying he doesn't want to incriminate himself.
