MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin has been appointed to a position with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

Commissioner Bill Gibbons, who heads the department, announced Wednesday that Godwin would serve as his Deputy Commissioner.

"I gotta tell you coming from an old North Memphis boy that was raised right across the street over here: I'm freakin' excited," Godwin said.

Gibbons and Godwin worked together for years when Gibbons was Shelby County district attorney. Gibbons said Godwin is a natural fit for his new position.

"He brings great management skills, high-energy, and a sharp focus to this new chapter in his public career," Gibbons said. "Communities across this will benefit from his service."

Godwin will move to Nashville to take the job, which pays $110,000 per year.  he will oversee day-to-day operations of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Homeland Security, the driver's license division, and Internal Affairs reports.

His first assignment will include a top-to-bottom review of the DPS.

"I'm gonna observe and listen and I wanna learn," he said. "And I want to find out how are we as a team gonna make that better."

Godwin is scheduled to step down as Memphis Police Director on April 14th.  He will begin his new job on April 18.
