Middle name mix up lands wrong man in jail

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Police say they kept the wrong man behind bars for a day because they mistakenly thought he had broken the state's sex offender laws.

Officers arrested Corey Sebastian Dickerson on Feb. 28 for failing to register as a sex offender. His arrest was based on information from the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, said MPD spokesperson Sgt. Karen Rudolph in a written statement.

Rudolph said Dickerson repeatedly told officers that he wasn't responsible for the crime. However the following day, police found out that Corey Sebastian Dickerson wasn't the man they were looking for.

"It was determined that a different person with the same first and last name, but a different middle name, was actually the responsible party," Rudolph said.

Dickerson had made bond and had already been released from jail by the time officers realized their mistake.

Dickerson's neighbor, Roy Johnson, was surprised by the arrest.

"Sad thing to hear about," he said. "Mistakes are made everyday, but they should have done a little bit more research to find out if he was truly the one they were looking for."

Johnson was glad the mistake was caught.

"As long as they realize they made a mistake and try to make it right, hopefully he can go on about his life," he said.

The case has been dismissed and the arrest has been expunged from Dickerson's record.

Action News 5's attempts to contact Dickerson Thursday were unsuccessful.
