Action News 5 Dominates Morning, Noon and Night

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Nielsen Media Research is reporting Action News 5 swept all the major news time periods during the February survey period.

According to Nielsen, the 5:00 a.m., 6:00 a.m., Noon, 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. newscasts on WMC-TV 5 were all top-rated with Mid-South viewers. While Action News 5 regularly dominates the evening newscasts, this is the first time the station has won all the major newscasts in a single ratings period in more than 15 years.

According to Nielsen, Action News 5 at 10:00 p.m. was the highest rated newscast in the Mid-South with a 12.1 household rating. That's equal to nearly 84,000 households viewing nightly – beating the nearest competitor by more than 18,000 households nightly.

WMC General Manager Lee Meredith said he was very grateful the station's relationship with its viewers is continuing to grow.

"We're encouraged by the growth of these news ratings," Meredith said. "Coupled with the skyrocketing numbers that we're seeing on the internet and on mobile devices, this is very humbling. We never take our viewers for granted."

Action News 5 News Director Tracey Rogers attributed the station's recent ratings gains to a variety of factors, but she specifically mentioned the dedication of Dave Brown and the Action News 5 Storm Tracking Team.

"In February, we saw snow, rain, sleet and severe thunderstorms," said Action News 5 News Director Tracey Rogers. "Chief Meteorologist Dave Brown, Ron Childers, John Bryant and Tim Van Horn were tracking storms with the best weather technology and decades of experience. Our viewers say how they trust us all year, in all kinds of weather, and I'm very proud of our team for serving the Mid-South so well."

Action News 5 also took the top spot at 6:00 p.m.  The 6:00 p.m. newscast had an 11.6 household rating, equaling about 80,000 homes daily and beating the closest competitor by more than 50%.

Action News 5 at 5:00 p.m. won with a 9.8 household rating, which equals a daily average of about 68,000 households viewing. That's about  17,000 households more than the station's closest competitor.

In the morning newscasts, Action News 5 at 6:00 a.m. finished first with a 7 household rating equaling a daily average of about 48,000 households. Action News 5 at 5:00 a.m. won the early morning news race with a 3.8 rating which translates to more than 23,000 households viewing daily.  

For the first time in more than 15 years, Action News 5 at noon beat all competition with a 6.9 rating, averaging about 47,000 households viewing daily.
