COVINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - For students at Covington Integrated Arts Academy, Saturday is just another day in the classroom.

"You can see your friends and learn with them and play with them," said seventh grader McKayla Baltimore.

Since January, about 100 students in grades three through eight have volunteered their time to come in on Saturdays and work on their test scores.

With the state TCAP less than a month away, students and teachers want to make sure they are ready for the big test.

"We figured they wanted something to do on Saturday," said Dr. Bonnie Wright with CIAA. "They wanted to be with friends. Sometimes they were here anyway for a ball game and they liked to congregate and socialize on Saturday, and they don't mind learning when learning is fun."

The classes are called Saturday Academy. TCAP prep classes meet from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. until Saturday, April 9.

"They make it fun in a way you actually want to learn and want to come," said fifth grader Star Gillia. "And when you do leave, it gets stuck in your head."

Teachers said the extra classes help in two ways. They not only help raise students' state test scores, but also help raise the school's average as well.

Saturday students are rewarded with everything from a pancake breakfast to a picnic. TCAP testing begins on Monday, April 11.
