MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - An attempted robbery turned deadly when a pair of men opened fire on a Papa John's Pizza delivery driver as he sat in his car Thursday night.

Police say the 56-year-old victim had just delivered a pizza to a home in the 6011 Apartments, near Ridgeway Blvd. and Hickory Hill Rd., when two men approached his car.

Investigators said the men demanded the driver's money and when he refused, the crooks fired a single gunshot.  The bullet hit the victim and he was taken to the Med, but later died.

Officers say the killers ran away from the scene before police arrived.

Friday, three miles away from the crime scene at the Papa John's where the driver worked, a sign on the door said they'd lost an employee named "Ron."  The business was closed for the day.

No one has been arrested. If you know anything that might help officers solve this case, call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.

Papa John's releasted the following statement:

We are saddened by the loss of one of our valued team members last night.

Claude "Ron" Brake had been Papa John's team member for the past 6 years and he was well respected, and loved within the Papa John's family.  The Papa John's restaurant at 2757 South Mendenhall Rd. where Ron worked has been closed today to honor his memory.  A grief counselor is currently meeting with our team at that restaurant to assist them during this difficult time.

Papa John's is fully cooperating with the local police department as they investigate this crime and we ask that anyone with information that could lead to an arrest in the case will contact local authorities.
