MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis man was shot through his front door by an unknown gunman early Sunday morning.

The victim, 33-year-old Elijah Lawrence, was at the MED Sunday night after three young suspects knocked on his door around 3:00 a.m. Sunday.  The shooter is still on the loose.

"He opened the door, seen these three young kids and they had a gun," said a friend of Lawrence who wished to remain anonymous.  "So he tried to close the door."

The friend said the teens were asking for someone.

"He didn't recognize the name of the people they were asking for," he said.

Police said the gunman shot at Lawrence anyway.  There were six bulletholes in Lawrence's door.

Police said Lawrence was hit in the chest.

"I heard him hollering in the back, saying 'police, police police, police,'" said neighbor Andrew Williams.  "All of a sudden he collapsed in the back."

Blood still soaked the ground outside the Highland Park apartment more than 12 hours after the incident.  Neighbors said Lawrence is a husband and father of tree.

Williams said crime in the apartment complex near Winchester and South Perkins is bad.

"The past few weeks I've been hearing a lot of gunshots," said Williams.

Two weeks ago, a 20-year-old victim was critically wounded in a shooting at a neighboring condominium complex.  He ran to a gas station for help.  Police said a suspect is in custody.

Police are searching for the gunman responsible for this shooting.

The MED said the victim's family does not want his current condition released.
