Harbor Town mess has nearby residents fuming

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A mess piling up in Harbor Town has residents fuming.  For the past two months, Shawn Danko says he and many other Harbor Town residents have been worried about a gigantic problem in their neighborhood.

"It's horrendous, it's bad, it's horrible," Danko said Tuesday. "We've already got a lot of garbage that's made its way into the harbor because they water level is very high.  But this is beyond what we've seen in years past."

Danko claims a salvage company created the debris after it dismantled an old barge for the metal and left all the Styrofoam from the interior of the barge.

"You've got this for-profit salvage company that extracts all the metal and gets the benefit of making money off it," he said. "Then they leave the taxpayer with the clean up of this mess."

Danko says the mess is not only an eyesore, it's also causing some serious environmental concerns.

"My house backs right up to the river, so I see all that Styrofoam floating behind the house," he said. "Not to mention there's a lot of waterfowl back there."

Danko says there no reason why the north end of the harbor should look like a dump, and wonders if the city got revenue from the salvage company for the clean-up - or if city officials even know about the problem.

"My belief is that the city had no idea what was going on," he said. "I don't believe that the city if they had known this project was happening would have let this happen."

Reached for comment, a spokesperson for the city of Memphis said officials were aware of the situation, and looking into it.
