MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two Mid-South teens died after a weekend crash in Shelby County.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said 16-year-old Michael Cleveland of Oakland lost control of his Ford Mustang and swerved head-on into a pickup truck.

The crash took Cleveland's life and the life of his friend, 18-year-old Zachery Watson of Collierville.

The accident happened on an S-curve on Collierville-Arlington Road just after 9:00 p.m. Saturday night.

Shelby County Sheriff's spokesman Chip Washington said the two home schooled teens died on impact.  Witnesses said Cleveland's Mustang sped into the curve, skidded into the northbound lane and hit a pickup head-on.

"Our preliminary investigation shows that speed was indeed a factor in this accident," said Washington.  "And unfortunately, neither of the two individuals in the Mustang were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident."

Investigators said it was pitch black at the time and the car was moving faster than the 45 miles per hour speed limit.  Two wooden crosses now lay where the teens lost their lives.

"It could be dangerous if you don't observe the speed limit and you don't follow the rules," said Washington.  "Unfortunately, we've lost two young people as a result."

The crash left the pickup truck driver unscathed.  He has not been charged with any crime.

A joint funeral service for Cleveland and Watson will be held on Thursday, March 17 at Peebles West Funeral Chapel on Highway 64 in Oakland, Tennessee.  Visitation begins at 11:00 a.m. and the funeral will start at 2:00 p.m.
