OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC-TV) - Building codes have created problems along the way for a new ice skating rink coming to Olive Branch.

Jack Rogers, a hockey Dad turned business partner, is a part of a group bringing the new sheet of ice to town.

"We wanted a place for hockey players, figure skaters, and the community to come skating," said Rogers.

A warehouse on Ridgeway Industrial Road is the future home of the Mid-South Ice House. However, there has been some roughing along the way. An existing Olive Branch building code put the project in the penalty box. It says an ice rink the size of the proposed rink must have 168 parking spaces.

"We've got, I believe, 141 and that was really all we could get," said Rogers.

According to Rogers, the group purchased an additional two acres of land for parking, but still fell short of the required spaces.

Much like a skating rink, Rogers said, an ice facility doesn't need that many spaces because a lot of skaters are dropped off. Rogers believes 141 spaces is enough. The Olive Branch Board of Adjustment agreed, and approved the proposed parking.

"Typically you're looking at 135 to140 parking spaces for a single sheet facility like what we have," said Rogers.

Tuesday night, the Olive Branch Board of Alderman voted to also approve the additional parking. With the city on their team, Rogers believes its time for a power play.

"Everybody is behind this. This is going to be a good thing for the area. Everybody is excited about it," he said.

Rogers said they will break ground in April and they hope to open the facility in August.
