Mid-South protesters call for peace in Libya

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Protesters in Memphis called for peace in the North African nation of Libya Sunday as strikes on the country continued.

The Mid-South Peace and Justice Center organized a peace vigil at the corner of Poplar and Highland in East Memphis Sunday.  The vigil gave protesters a chance to show their opposition to the US presence in Libya.

"What we do hope is that we can find a way that we can withdraw US military forces from being involved in that and in any conflict in the Middle East as quickly as possible and with as little loss of life as possible," said Jacob Flowers with the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center.

"We've seen this again and again and again from the United States," said protester Neal Gammill.  "Our solution is always to go bombing instead of looking at other options."

The Pentagon expects to turn control of the mission in Libya over to a coalition led either by the French and British or NATO "in a matter of days."
