City fires impound lot supervisor charged with theft

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The city of Memphis has fired an impound lot supervisor charged with theft.

Rickey Shotwell is accused of allowing a man to pilfer vehicles in the city's impound lot, sharing stolen items like laptops or navigation systems. That man became an informant after he was caught by recently installed surveillance cameras.

Police investigators said the informant delivered the stolen items to Shotwell in the parking lot of a Church's Chicken located less than a mile from the impound lot in Frayser.

Shotwell, 52, was charged with three counts of automobile burglary.

Last week, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton had strong words about the thefts.

"We have a cancer among our ranks," said Wharton.  "Let's cut it out."

Other impound lot employees who were suspended last week were reinstated Tuesday, but the investigation into the thefts continues.
