BROWNSVILLE, TN (WMC-TV) - Haywood High School was closed for Spring Break Wednesday, but that did not stop students from talking about softball coach and gym teacher Chanda Franks.

This week, a grand jury indicted Franks on 19 counts of statutory rape and sexual battery involving a 14-year-old student on the softball team Franks coached.

According to the indictment, the incidents happened between November of 2010 and February of this year.

Franks was a gym and wellness teacher and softball and cross country coach at Haywood High.

Carlos Holmes said he remembers Franks when he was a senior 10 years ago.  He said it was her first year at the school.

"For a small area such as Brownsville, it's a shocking story," said Holmes.

The indictment lists five witnesses who testified before the grand jury.  One of them is the 14-year-old student, who will be 15 next month.

Last month, Franks appeared in court after being accused of fondling the same 14-year-old girl between August of last year and February of this year.

"It just gives the city and the school a black eye," said parent Jerry Rogers.  "A teacher is going to have a lot of influence over a 14-year-old girl.  I just hope and pray the young lady is not damaged in any kind of way."

Franks is currently out on bond.
